Friends Of the Central Library
Letter from the President

Dear Friends of the Library and fellow readers,

This year marks our 16th as sponsors of the Rosamond Gifford Library Lecture Series. What started out as just a great idea of a few book lovers has now become a series of national renown and a source of pride for Central New York. As president of Friends of the Central Library, I look back in awe at the accomplishments of those who have come before me. The incredible success of this program has also created incredibly high expectations. Our little experiment has now become a dynamo, requiring much time and effort and resources to keep it running. We promise not to rest on our laurels.

Often hidden in our accomplishments, is the fact that we are the Friends of the Central Library. Our mission is to support the Libraries of Central New York, and through them, advance literacy in our community. We have raised over $250,000 for the Central Library and continue to seek ways to help out during these trying economic times. It is important for all our patrons to understand that the cost of bringing you the very best speakers in the world continues to grow. Your ticket price does not cover it. We need sponsored support from community businesses, organizations and individuals in order to maintain our highest standards of quality, diversity and popularity.

Once again, I want to thank Denise Headd and our board of directors for their enthusiastic efforts on behalf of FOCL. And of course, I want to thank all of you, our patrons, for your continuing loyalty for this wonderful local treasure. Check out our website at giffordlectureseries.org for news of coming events, or just to let us know your thoughts. I look forward to sharing a great year with all of you. Remember, the more you read, the smarter you get.

Jeff Meltzer
President, Friends of the Central Library
